Planning Strategy for Tralee Town

The primary planning strategy for Tralee is guided by a vision which acknowledges the regional importance of the Tralee Killarney linked hub and the county capital status of the town.  The vision seeks to improve and develop the unique quality of life on offer to its citizens and visitors, which is possibly one of the most important goals of the planning system.  Furthermore, the Town Council’s vision and planning strategy seeks to strengthen the potential of the town as a major economic driver in the region, in addition to further developing its exceptional range of tourism attractions, views and vistas and built and natural heritage.

The strategy of maintaining and enhancing the role of the town is pursued by implementing policies to regenerate the historic centre, encouraging conservation and urban renewal activities, promoting sustainable traffic movements, and coordinating Tralee Town Council’s investment activities with private initiatives.  These strategies have the objective of maintaining and enhancing the vitality, vibrancy and viability of the town.  The Council’s sustainable planning policy seeks to provide for a compact urban centre with growth concentrated on lands close to the town centre to allow for a balanced approach to development.

Recent public and private sector projects have enhanced and regenerated the public domain.  This has given a vibrancy and vitality to the town centre and its environs.  These improvements underpin both the private sector’s and the Council’s commitment to the sustainable regeneration of the town and help support the town centre and wider environs of Tralee.
